Army Specialist Adam Winfield’s fellow soldiers threatened his life after he tried to alert the command structure to US war crimes he had witnessed against Afghans, including the deliberate targeting of civilians in the Maywand district. In the documentary “The Kill Team,” Winfield said a brother-in-arms had even sliced a finger from an Afghan as a souvenir.
As Winfield and his father, back home, coordinated to try to halt the brutality, fellow veterans plotted how Winfield might have an “accident” in the weight room, or perhaps fall victim to a “friendly-fire” incident.
