Plants produce the oxygen we breathe and the food we eat. It’s thought that up to 1/3rd of all plant species are facing extinction and we don’t know enough about them to know if we can’t live without them.

Enter Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank partnership in Sussex, UK which is the largest off-site plant conservation project in the world.

Working with partners in more than 50 countries (including Georgia, shown in this piece) by 2009, they had banked the seeds of 10% of the planet’s wild plant species.

The faciity is hardened against nuclear attack, flooding “or anything else we might throw at it,” according to it curator.
