Years ago, an attempt by the Church of Scientology to censor embarrassing footage of Tom Cruise led viewers of an American imageboard called 4Chan to fire back.
It wasn’t yet a political crusade with much hard ideological weight, but the battle against the church’s litigiousness made one thing clear: Anonymous wanted a society with radically more transparency.
Years later, they would unite with “fourth estate” organization WikiLeaks, as it faced financial and logistical embargoes from corporate giants, Visa and Amazon.com.
