Onstage at TED2014, Charlie Rose interviews Google CEO Larry Page, 41 with a net worth of almost US$29 billion about his far-off vision for the company. It includes aerial bikeways and Internet balloons … and then it gets even more interesting, as Page
talks through the company’s recent acquisition of Deep Mind, a UK-based Artificial Intelligence company that creates computers with superhuman performance, in th activities towards which it is directed.

Viewers of this clip will notice that Page’s voice is somewhat unusual. Not discussed at length, in this talk is that he has been suffering from a mysterious affliction of his vocal cords for 14 years. His right vocal cord is paralyzed from a cold that he contracted in 2012, while his left cord was paralyzed in 1999. Thus far, doctors have been unable to identify the exact cause of whatever has been robbing him of his physical voice.

Nevertheless, he is able to get many points across. A comment Page makes, here that really stuck out for me is:

“I don’t think we can have a democracy if we’re having to protect you and our users from the government – for stuff we’ve never had a conversation about,” [as a nation, as a Democracy].

…I’m not sure how all of what Page says jibes with allegations by numerous ex-NSA insiders, such as Wayne Madsen, that all big players in Silicon Valley – with Google being the biggest – are on the NSA payroll…

How could the CEO of Google have ‘plausible deniability’ of THAT? With his soft voice and utopian visions of the future, one would never suspect that such charges could ever be true…
