This video documents how General Rene Schneider, the leader of Chile 40 years ago, invited the ire of the American business community, particularly after nationalizing the copper industry. The CIA financed and logistically supported the groups of General Roberto Viaux and General Camilo Valenzuela, who assassinated the Chilean leader on October 24th, 1970.

Soon after, when Schneider’s successor, Salvador Allende came into power, the CIA paid millions of dollars to right-wing opposition groups to create pressures, exploit weaknesses, magnify obstacles and hasten Allende’s deposition. A CIA report released in 2000 records some U.S. $6.8 million spent to depose Allende.

These actions set the stage for the notorious criminal, Augusto Pinochet, to take power.
