Just about every two years Mars makes its closest approach to earth, when we usually send our robots off to the red planet.

Some circle it and others land on it to get soil samples. A few crawl around its craters — paving the way, we hope, for human settlers.

Did Mars develop long enough for life to arise? Could it live beneath its ice caps or underground?
