Chris Hardwick, host of the cable channel, AMC’s “Talking Dead” recently wrapped his show with a nice tribute to his recently-deceased father, which I think I could not be a more appropriate way to start this Thanksgiving Day.
Having spent the past 7 months, myself facing and managing the potential deaths of my two parents before the end of this year, both separated by 5,000 miles, Hardwick’s words ring very loudly in my own ears, indeed.
Luckily for me, it has recently emerged that both appear to have pulled through from their severe crises and both do look like they’ll be around for a while longer. For this, I am most grateful on this day in which we all stop and give thanks together with our families, in what is certainly the best American holiday there is, in my opinion.
Family, and the few people who graduate to family status in our lives, in one way or another are all we really “have”, during our short time on this Earth and sometimes we may lose track of our appreciation for the gifts of who they are to us.
As a friend recently said to me: “It’s important to remember that not everyone is surrounded by large wonderful, loving and accepting families. Some of us have problems during the holidays and sometimes are overcome with great sadness when we remember the loved ones who are not with us. And, many people have no one to spend these times with and are besieged by loneliness. We all need caring thoughts and loving prayer right now…give a moment of support to all those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just need to know that someone cares. Do it for all of us, for nobody is immune.”
I wish my US viewers a very Happy Thanksgiving and of course, my same sentiments go out to all viewers outside the US, as well.
