Power Line Fireball

Standing just inside their doorway, suburbanite Québécois quake as a fireball sizzles its way down their street on power lines. Most likely a branch falls between the lines, and begins to burn, vaporizes, ionizing the air between the lines. The ionized air conducts the electricity, allowing an arc to travel up the linse in a direction reverse to the normal flow of electricity.

One observer suggests that a fuse cutout/lightning arrester combo, as opposed to a transformer, absorbs the energy you hear at the end as a loud bang.
