This looks almost apocalyptic but it’s apparently common along the shores of the Sea of Azov in southern Russia, where 25 active “mud volcanoes” spew mud, methane and hydrogen sulfide.
Russia’s Taman Peninsula has about over 20 mud volcanoes, mostly active. The eruptions are often quiet but can be violent — though they are never as hot as your typical volcanoes.
