Behind the glossy facade of the fantasy-world of the Sochi Winter Olympics, there is turmoil in the streets of the former Soviet “Republic” of Ukraine.
Most people (including myself, until just now) are unaware, that Ukraine is the largest country, by territory in the European Continent and that for a brief moment, during the 10th and 11th centuries, it was the largest and most powerful state in Europe.
Further, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine inherited a 780,000-man military force on its territory, equipped with the third-largest nuclear weapons arsenal in the world.
Ukraine was first inhabited at least forty-four thousand years ago. It is a candidate site for both the domestication of the horse and for the origins of the Indo-European language family.
Due to its fertile conditions, it is seen as the breadbasket of Europe. As of 2011, Ukraine was the world’s third-largest grain exporter. Ukraine is one of ten most attractive agricultural land “acquisition regions”, according to a January 26, 2014 World Trade Organization Report.
Ukraine also has the tragic distinction of being the site of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster on April 26, 1986; still considered to be the worst nuclear reactor accident in history.
This was the only accident to receive the highest possible rating of 7 by the International Nuclear Event Scale, indicating a “major accident”, until the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in March 2011. At the time of the accident, 7 million people lived in the contaminated territories, including 2.2 million in Ukraine.
After the accident, the new city of Slavutych was built outside the exclusion zone to house and support the employees of the plant, which was decommissioned in 2000. Recent reports indicate that at least 1,000,000 deaths have resulted in its aftermath and can be attributed to this disaster, to say nothing of the horribly deformed and children and chronically ill people, still living in surrounding areas, without the means to leave their ancestral homes.
From a higher geopolitic perspective, it might appear that, ever since the UK and Putin put the kibosh on Neocon efforts to begin World War III in Syria (i.e., a proxy war between the US and Russia), the attention for the scene of such a conflagration has now been switched from Syria to Ukraine, where fierce tensions exist between whether this nation would remain under its current auspices of the EU/NATO allies of the West, or if it were to revert to its cultural and historical ties with Russia.
In recent years, Ukraine has been under Western influence and news coverage such as the video above, suggest that the people wish to remain in alliance with the West, contrary to the leadership of President Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister, Serhiy Arbuzov.
But the more resounding message that I am receiving from this beautiful young woman in this video is that Ukraine wants to be under the control of *neither* group and that Ukraine wants to enjoy the its own peace, prosperity and self determination, as do many other peoples on Earth, who want no part of this geostrategic tug-of-war between NATO vs Russia, etc.
