Former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan led a body of cultural conservatives convinced that Marxist academics successfully infiltrated American society, thereby undermining empiricism, the family structure and even religion itself. Those academics, members of the Institute for Social Research, known as the Frankfurt School, fled German fascists to set up shop at New York City’s Columbia University, where they began a “long march through the institutions” of education and entertainment. Cultural Marxism’s antipositivist philosophy regarded science itself as instilling callousness to groups with grievances against dominant culture.
