In 2011, researchers witnessed for the first time a mass ice separation triggered by a tsunami.

Previously, scientists could only speculate that this happened at all.

Following the Tohoku earthquake and resulting tsunami, sea swell propagated throughout the Pacific basin. Eighteen hours later, a 50-square-mile chunk of ice was shoved off of the coast of an ice shelf.

Satellite imagery reveals two very large icebergs.
