The sale of neonicotinoids, the most popular insecticide in the world, continues to represent a multibillion-dollar industry for agrochemical giants, despite bans on some neonicotoids that the European Union instituted in 2013. The bans came on the heels of a European Food Safety Authority study concluding neonicotoids were responsible for decimating the honeybee population, which plays a crucial role in plant pollination.
An EPA review of potential harms of these insecticides is set to conclude in 2018, by when US environmental activists hope that agency will have acted to rein in their use.
