During the 1940s Dutchman Arnold Gerrit Henskes, who went by the Esperanto stage name Mirin Danjo, amazed the medical community with his ability to jog with a sword penetrating his body. Henskes considered himself a prophet and believed guardian angels spoke to him, commanding him to demonstrate invulnerability while preaching against materialism and war. Only the voices that commanded him in 1948 to swallow a steel needle appear to have finally inspired his death.
