In the 1960s physicist Peter Higgs said that an energy field permuated the entire universe. That field is now called the Higgs field. Nobody understood why some subatomic particles while some had little; others, none at all. The Higgs field interacted with the particles and gave them mass.

The field serves the same role to a particle as water does to a fish. A very streamlined fish interacts very little with the water and can move very quickly through it — like a low-mass particle. Massive particles interact more with the field and move more slowly.

The Higgs-Boson is the smallest part of the Higgs field.
