Dear Alexandra,
A lot of people believe we need to change minds to change the world. I believe that’s a Big Lie.
Look at the world we have. We have a social network, for example, with nearly a billion members, which was designed by a guy who is socially inept. There’s no rational argument for that, and its clumsy friending interface is antisocial to prove it. This didn’t happen because the inventor convinced us that we need a social prison where big corporations get to spam us with ads so that we can say hello to each other. It happened because he found his kind of people in elitist academic institutions, enough of his own tribe to form a club, people who were not good at face-to-face, so they needed a mask. The rest of us joined because that was the world in front of us, the best of a bunch of geeky social networks, and because that tribe – the geeks – have a lot of spare time to make flashy gadgets. I can use the g word because I’m a geek. But don’t worry, you can use it too. We can’t beat you up.
Bill Gates did something similar. He didn’t convince us that his DOS was great, and it wasn’t great. Every computer manufacturer who agreed to buy a few copies of DOS was offered a deal – they could have enough for all the rest of their computers for free if they promised to install them in all their computers. Gates didn’t change minds to change the world, he changed the world and then we all changed our minds because that was the world – one ring to control them all.
To advocate that we must change minds to change the world is to advocate conformity disguised as dissidence – a sheep in wolves’ clothing to make sheep of all who would be wolves. If your goal is to protect your tenured position, that’s perfect. But to believe instead that we must change the world to change minds is to believe that a small group of committed people can change the world, and you know that’s the only thing that ever has. The trick to keeping that committed group from actually accomplishing that change is to fool them into believing that the way they accomplish it is by changing minds.
Right now, the world is run by the people who are raping it. Eight out of ten people live on less than $10 a day. Very few of the other 1.4 billion will lift more than a finger to change that, and they own almost all the media and all the governments. But they don’t yet completely control the internet. So for a little while longer, we still have this tool to find people who already understand that we need to upgrade money, to give it back to the people.
SunMoney is one of these forbidden money designs. What’s different about it is that it’s more valuable than national money but is for community use only. So, instead of wealth flowing up to the top of the economic pyramid, it stays at the bottom, going around and around, developing all essential resources under local control. Imagine a money that gives every community water, food, sanitation, and shelter. Now add in art, culture, daycare, and everything else that can be accomplished entirely with local resources if only people have the money. Communities empowered to develop and protect all their human and natural resources.
