BBC Horizon’s show host, Jim Al-Khalili is a nuclear physics professor but he says he is a husband and father first.

He states up front that he has no agenda and no axe to grind and that he is not in the pay of either the nuclear energy industry or the environmental movement.

Although he has always thought that nuclear power was safe and efficient, he sets out for Japan to challenge his own assumptions, leaving the politics and the economics to one side and to focus purely on the science of whether or not nuclear power is safe.

He travels to Japan, where non-essential lights and machines have been shut down from energy rationing. He seeks to find out what has happened in the Fukushima disaster and what are the human impacts.

Documentary covering Fukushima, Chernobyl, and alternative nuclear power generation including Thorium.

Six months after the explosions at the Fukushima nuclear plant and the release of radiation there, Professor Jim Al-Khalili sets out to discover whether nuclear power is safe.

He begins in Japan, where he meets some of the tens of thousands of people who have been evacuated from the exclusion zone. He travels to an abandoned village just outside the zone to witness a nuclear clean-up operation.

Jim draws on the latest scientific findings from Japan and from the previous explosion at Chernobyl to understand how dangerous the release of radiation is likely to be and what that means for our trust in nuclear power.
