Perhaps the greatest living English-language documentary filmmaker, Adam Curtis, says politicians and journalists want you so confused that you’ll give up and accept, for better or for worse, the world order as it is.
This Curtis segment tells the story of Putin adviser Vladislav Surkov, whom Curtis calls a “hero of our time.†Taking cues from the world of conceptual art, Surkov and the Putin government are backing neo-Nazis on the far right and human rights activists of the far left to undermine perception – in effect, so that no one can understand what’s going on.
And Curtis says U.K. leaders’ weaving of nonlinear political narrative is no different.
