From computers at New York City police headquarters, officers edited Wikipedia to shape public perception of their controversial tactics. From the Wikipedia page “The Death of Eric Garner,” Capital New York reporter Kelly Weill traced edits to 1 Police Plaza. The edits cast aspersions on Garner’s behavior at the time of his arrest, and defended the use of the choke hold against Garner.

NYPD tactics and racial profiling sparked subsequent nationwide protests.

Garner, a father of six, died in July 2014 in the course of a Staten Island arrest for illegally selling cigarettes.
