In the 1950s, a secret emergency relocation center to house Congress in the event of a nuclear war was built on the grounds of the exclusive Greenbrier Resort in western Virginia.

Although the bunker was kept stocked with supplies for 30 years, it was never used as an emergency location.

The bunker’s existence remained secret until Ted Gup of the The Washington Post revealed it in a 1992 story and immediately afterwards, the government decommissioned the bunker.

The facility has since been renovated and is today a tourist attraction called “The Bunker.”
