Today our money is backed by nothing.
Throughout human history, hundreds of types of articles have been used as money. Spearheads were among the first. Eastern Woodland Native Americans used wampum, sacred shell beads.
This 1947 U.S. government film points out that money should be something of inherent, obvious and uniform value. In the ’40s, the government understood that money should be durable and divisible.
