Gunfire erupted during a Charlie Kirk event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, sending the packed crowd scrambling for safety.
Bystanders told Deseret News that Kirk, the Turning Point USA founder, was struck near the neck while taking student questions during a Q&A session. Video circulating online shows attendees screaming and ducking for cover as shots rang out, with witnesses immediately posting about the chaos on social media.
A source in contact with Kirk’s colleagues told the Daily Caller he is still alive and currently in the hospital. He lost a lot of blood. “This is an ongoing situation,” Turning Point USA wrote in a statement to the Daily Caller. “We are in the process of confirming reports that Charlie Kirk was shot. He is in the hospital, and we are praying for him at this time.”
FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is “closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting” and that “agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.” Attorney General Pam Bondi said the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is on the scene.
Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom likewise described the attack as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible” in an X post, urging Americans to “reject political violence in EVERY form.”
