Professor Christopher Busby, Scientific secretary of the European Committee on radiation risks says that fuel rods at Fukushima got blown sky high, that concentrations of uranium and plutonium particles had been detected in air filters in Hawaii and the Marianas Islands at the time of this interview last week.

He says the people who are “talking this down are generally in the nuclear industry. There;s a lot of money riding on it. The risk model and epidemiology have already be done with Chernobyl and 1.4 million have died of cancer so far and many, many people were made very sick from it. Those who don’t know their history are doomed to repeat it.”

A US nuclear safety professional who I queried said that the only way Fukushima’s plutonium could escape Japan by air was “Unless you attached the core to a rocket.”

California, USA: Nuclear Safety Professional

“The stuff we’ve seen here on the west coast was an Iodine isotope in the rainwater, and it’s, so far, really nothing to worry about.”

Q: Is there no way that plutonium or uranium didn’t get lofted high into the air during one of those explosions?

“No, no way. It wouldn’t. That just wouldn’t happen unless you attached the core to a rocket. The explosions were from hydrogen that was produced as part of the normal sequence, but because of the earthquake the containment was overstressed and failed. Kaboom.

“The real concern I have here is for people ingesting Alpha Particle emitters in Japan, in their food and water. The Iodine and Bismuth isotopes that made it into the air will make it into the food chain and be a problem for years. I’m working at present near San Francisco, and I know what we’ve seen here in our water samples after the rains a couple weeks ago. No problem for US residents at all, but I am concerned for the Japanese. I will probably be going over there in the next few weeks.”
