Liquid mercury was of no practical or scientific use to the Maya who built the city of Teotihucan 1,800 years ago. Scholars speculate that the substance may have had religious or artistic significance. Mexican archaeologist Sergio Gómez, who discovered mercury in April while excavating the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, speculates that the shiny liquid to them represented an underworld river or lake.
