The Cold War era was a spooky time; I remember, especially when Reagan was President that it felt as if a Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) event between us the then-Soviet Union would occur at any minute. That’s was it felt like for me, as a young teen. My feelings were merely a fact of life for many who were born during that era.
As the current Occupant of the White House makes many impassioned speeches, which could easily move us into a MAD event, the stylings of Reagan now have a new resonance for me. Though, I admit that as a child, I absolutely despised him – looking back, I do appreciate the gentility – bred by being born above a liquor store in a small town in the Midwest – in a VERY different America from the one we have today – and his glibness with storytelling and jokes, do make one nostalgic for a cozy time when we “knew” who our “enemies” were – which, however, it turns, out, they were not.
We’re all in this together. I am present to my love for all individuals on Earth and for all peoples, at this time and I know that I cannot be alone in feeling these feelings and that these feelings need to be cultivated and that we must learn to love each other, here on this planet because there’s no better choice – because we’re all in this together, my beloveds!
