A recent phone tapping issue not only closed Rupert Murdoch’s “News of the World,” leaving its workers fired. It also sparked a clash between Murdoch and U.K. politicians.

Phone tapping received a lot of scrutiny due to News Corporation’s abuses. But why do people still believe the myth that their Web-surfing habits are kept confidential?

Site cookies allow advertisers to know your habits. Internet service providers, or ISPs, keep tabs on what you view. Hackers may scrutinize you for monetary gain or voyeuristic pleasure (although of course that’s already illegal.) And the people who fix your PC can look at whatever they wish.

Do we need legislation to rein in these privacy violators?
