On Monday, the office of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake seemed to walk back statements she had made Saturday — after rioters laid waste to downtown — allowing for property destruction. Protests in the wake of a 25-year-old black male’s death in police custody would continue Monday night, when they spilled over into arson and looting.
The Justice Department and Baltimore Police are investigating the circumstances of Freddie Gray’s death and admit culpability for failing to offer him proper medical care for the spinal injury he sustained during his arrest.
At a press conference Saturday, Mayor Rawlings-Blake said, “It’s a very delicate balancing act, because while we tried to make sure [citizens] were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well.”
On Monday, a spokesperson for the mayor, Howard Libit, issued a statement seeming to walk back the mayor’s remarks. It read in part: “The mayor is not saying that she asked police to give space to people who sought to create violence. Any suggestion otherwise would be a misinterpretation of her statement.”
