Ecuadorian scientific researchers demonstrate ecological damage caused to their country by drug war policy instituted by the Colombian and United States governments, only 10 miles away from their own border. Glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup, is used to control the growth of coca crops in Colombia; and in Afghanistan, by drug authorities, to deter poppy production. However, the agent, developed by conglomerate Monsanto, is well-known to cause birth defects.
