Electro-spinning is the process of using high electric fields to draw very fine fibers from a liquid. These fibers, only a couple hundred nanometers in diameter, have a wide range of possible uses. The cost of producing them has limited them, though, to very high-end applications.
Now a team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a new way to develop them. Standard chip manufacturing processes have made production more efficient. Chip manufacturing techniques have made it possible to carefully manufacture emitters.
