Some disasters defy prediction and belief. But in 1980, a bizarre man-made catastrophe suddenly created a 200-foot-deep sinkhole of five square kilometers.

All of it was the result of oil and mining operations coming into collision. A Texaco oil rig accidentally drilled into a salt mine, causing the entire lake to flood into the mine. For a few days, the largest waterfall in Louisiana resulted.
