This clip has received over 14 million views in less than 3 years, since it was posted by Saudi-based musician Alaa Wardi, who is a YouTube sensation in the Arab world and in Turkey.
In Saudi Arabia, there is a prevailing idea that music and art are distractions from God. Music is considered “sinful” or “haram” by religious leaders, including the Imam of the Grand Mosque in Medina, Salah Al Budair. Very devout Muslims believe it is especially sinful for songs to refer to women and for women to be involved in the composition of music.
Important religious texts refer negatively to non-percussion musical instruments but Alaa Wardi works within these proscriptions and sometimes pokes fun at them, with his a capella compositions. This one, “No Woman, No Drive” is a spoof of the Bob Marley classic, “No Woman, No Cry” featuring Saudi stand up comedians, Hisham Fageeh and Fahad Albutairi, as a satirical comment on the Saudi Arabian ban on women drivers. The video quickly went viral on the same day that a number of Saudi women defied the driving ban in Saudi Arabia in October 2013.
Of himself, Wardi writes, “Alaa Wardi is my name, making music is my trade, bringing happiness is my desire, uplifting souls is my aim, all people are my brothers and sisters, all countries are my home, love and equality are my beliefs, hatred and prejudice depress me…”

They all completely stayed within the strictures of Wahhabism I guess because the repercussions of not doing so would result in serious problems for them.
Oddly, he is considered to be pushing the boundaries of his culture, as mild and as fruitless as it may seem to Westerners
The direct email responses have been interesting. Westerners were telling me that it was offensive to women and not funny at all and how could I send such a thing and the very polite Saudi gentleman suggested that I was being culturally insensitive about the philosophy of segregating the sexes in that country, which is the birthplace of Islam and which strives to practice the faith in its purest form.
I had to explain to the Westerners who were offended that this was exactly what you’re saying; satirical progressive activism by Saudi performers. I had to explain to the Saudi that I’d written about the Imam’s views on music and non-percussive instruments and had allowed the video to do all the a cappella-ing for me about the ban on women drivers; that I’d completely refrained from passing judgment or voicing any opinion about these beliefs and practices (in a blog where I critique my own culture very harshly on an almost daily basis).
According to Wikipedia, segregation is more likely a pre-Islamic Bedouin cultural artifact. Orthodox Jews also segregate the sexes at Temple.
These are the Saudi State’s bases for segregation (Wikipedia):
“- sex segregation, justified under the Sharia legal notion of ‘shielding from corruption’ (dar al-fasaad), and
– women’s alleged ‘lack of capacity’ (adam al-kifaa’ah) which is the basis of the necessity of a male guardian (mahram) whose permission must be granted for travel, medical procedures, obtaining permits, etc.”
I am half-Brazilian, where the indigenous people are fairly naked and they don’t get all worked-up about nudity, their own or others’ and this attitude has seeped into the mass culture there, but attenuated slightly by Catholicism – full nudity is not OK on city beaches but what Americans would consider to be partial nudity is the norm. In the indigenous cultures, an entire village lives in a single lodge, all piled in together. This was/is probably the best way to protect against jungle panthers.
There is no win for anyone in these cultural debates, Alex. Someone is always offended. It’s completely stupid IMO but that’s the planet–adversaries before brothers. Let’s fight about it. The little video is as a microcosm of a bigger picture, differences. At least, you’ve not been threatened with a Fatwa from the Muslim side. That’s a win.
