Millenials, like me may appreciate for many reasons this video’s trivia about cartoon episodes shelved or pulled for apolitical reasons – such as the 1997 incident, when bright, flashing colors in an episode of Pokemon induced seizures in hundreds of Japanese children.
But that’s not the main reason we’re running this YouTube video.
Of particular interest is YouTube user, blameitonjorge’s explanation of how media conglomerates would pull children’s cartoons out of sensitivity to the victims of terrorist attacks, or even out of concern that the episodes would “incite paranoia.”
Following 9/11, Toon Disney pulled an episode of “The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog†because its antagonist, Dr. Robotnik, had planted bombs along a transportation system.
Disney has also pulled several episodes of the seemingly innocuous “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command†due to their involving terrorist attacks. One episode was actually entitled “Inside Job.”
The reasons cited were that the plot lines involved terrorist attacks. A scene in the “101 Dalmations: The Series†episode, “Alive ‘n Chicken†caused a similar corporate response – just because a cartoon dog flew an airplane into a windmill…
(Seems more like Disney had decided to pull re-runs of overly-obvious predictive programming!)
