Truth in the Myths of Giants

This is a slick little video produced by Gaia that considers the possibility that the mythical and the historical claims of giants – and the cover-up of their existence by the Smithsonian Institution – are true.

While I was aware of mid-19th century mainstream news reports of the remains of giants having been discovered and investigated by the Smithsonian, I’d never previously heard that giant skeletons had been found inside the “Great Pyramid” of Monk’s Mound, in southeastern Illinois. This much-overlooked structure, about 100 feet (30 m) high, but roughly the same size at its base as the Great Pyramid of Giza (13.1 acres / 5.3 hectares) is larger in circumference than the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan in Mexico.

I’d also never heard of the quote cited here from Abraham Lincoln: “The eyes of that species of extinct giants, whose bones fill the mounds of America, have gazed on Niagara, as ours do now. Contemporary with the whole race of men, and older than the first man, Niagara is strong, and fresh to-day as ten thousand years ago.”

While the narration of this clip claims Lincoln was referring to the bones of human giants then being excavated from ancient ceremonial mounds, Metabunk and others who seek to disprove this claim point out that the next sentence from Lincoln’s same piece of writing is, “The Mammoth and Mastodon – now so long dead, that fragments of their monstrous bones, alone testify, that they ever lived, have gazed on Niagara.”

This does not, however negate the ubiquity of giants in the traditions of peoples all over the world and throughout history – or the numerous reports in major 19th century newspapers of the remains of actual giants having been unearthed.
