This is a brilliant ‘Adam Ruins Everything’ comedy sketch that definitely leaves you wanting to know more about what’s really going on with your social media!

It features a cameo appearance by Ethan Zuckerman, now the director of the MIT Center for Civic Media and an Associate Professor of the Practice of Media Arts and Sciences. He was one of the original staff members of Tripod.com when he was 20 years old – and while there, he became the inadvertent inventor of the pop-up ad.

Remember: “If you’re not paying, you’re not the customer – you’re the product.”

    • Clever! It also works in reverse to diversify the user. I haven’t figured out the trigger mechanism, but I know when you cross an imaginary line, the algorithm switches from flooding you with liked sites to flooding you with opposite or un-liked sites. Still it’s stupid, like when you are curious about something such as a tire size for instance. That’s all you wanted to know, what your car’s OE tire size is. The next thing I know a hundred tire retailers and manufacturers are bombing me with tire ads. Like I care already! And the advertisers think they are getting their money’s worth. It’s a fools errand. Somehow recently I caught the internet reading my emails, keying off some word and bombing me with ads related to that word. It’s crazy like the CIA riding off in every direction like Keystone Cops!
