Alice Weidel, leader of the Alternative for Germany, delivered a combative speech at the CPAC conference in Budapest, warning that Europe faces a political and cultural struggle over national sovereignty. Weidel argues that European civilisation rests on Greek philosophy, Roman statecraft and Christian tradition, and says the sovereign nation-state is essential to preserving those foundations. She targets what she calls “Globalist elites” in Brussels, criticising mass migration, climate regulations, gender policies and EU economic policy.
Weidel also attacks European support for Ukraine, describing the war as one that is not Europe’s, and accuses governments of restricting free speech in the name of fighting disinformation. Using imagery of “apocalyptic horsemen”, she presents the political battle as an existential challenge to European prosperity and freedom. Weidel also expresses solidarity with Viktor Orbán and Fidesz, while declaring that the AfD’s political rise reflects growing frustration among European voters.
