Portugal’s right wing Chega party leader, André Ventura weighs in on the imprisonment under house arrest of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

TRANSCRIPT

André Ventura: Folks, I wanted to talk to you about Bolsonaro’s imprisonment. Why do I want to talk to you about it? I don’t like getting into the governance of another country and I know that sometimes this is a delicate subject.

But Brazil needs us, too. Brazil needs us to tell the corrupt leader, Lula da Silva that we are not going to allow him to do whatever he wants. That we are not going to allow Judge Alexandre de Moraes to do whatever he wants.

Bolsonaro was arrested because he used social media and he shared his image and his message. Bolsonaro was put under house arrest, because he used social media, because he used freedom of expression. This is not a question of agreeing with Bolsonaro or not agreeing with Bolsonaro.

Lula is corrupt, he is a thief and a dictator. He is turning Brazil into a dictatorship. Alexandre de Moraes is the judicial arm of this dictatorship.

And we have to understand this. Brazil was previously a democracy. We can’t allow this.

Or rather, they can do whatever they want, as a sovereign country. But we have the duty to speak, as we have done in relation to the corrupt power of Angola, as in relation to the corrupt power of Mozambique, so, in relation to the corrupt power of Brazil.

It doesn’t make sense to me, so I’m going to propose to the Portuguese government that it prevent judge Alexandre de Moraes from entering Portugal, to be able to have any connection to Portugal or to have any effect, in terms of presence, in terms of heritage, in Portugal.

They have to understand that we are not playing. They have to understand that freedom and democracy are to be taken seriously.

If we don’t do this now, it will soon come here and we will be very, very sorry for not acting in time.
