My Fake Baby

Wow. This is a film about the weirdest phenomenon that I’ve ever seen and which I’d never heard about. ‘My Fake Baby’ takes a look at the lives of women who spend up to thousands of dollars on very life-like, handmade dolls – and who manage to convince their husbands to go along with this.

These people dress them up, cuddle them, change their diapers and parade them around in baby carriages and justify the incredible expenses of buying all of the baby clothes and other baby accoutrements as “money well spent.”

Another woman comments, “You feel like somebody when you walk with a baby in a stroller.”

I’m absolutely dumbstruck by this film and the bittersweet stories of the people involved with this activity!

Called “reborns” this class of custom made dolls can be made to be warm, to have beating hearts, to appear to be breathing, to have capillaries showing through their skin.

The central character of this film is Jaime, a mother of four real children. She sees her expertise in creating these dolls as one of fulfilling the dreams of of other women by engineering fake babies to their specifications…
