    Lantern is a start-up to create a small, highly-portable Outernet satellite receiver which builds libraries of information for people in areas that are under-served by High Speed Internet, which is still the greater part of humanity, especially in the so-called Third World. According to the project’s own self-description:

    ===

    “Like the water we drink or the air we breathe, the information we consume feeds the very essence of what it means to be human. Lantern establishes a new baseline of human knowledge. We are not fixing the world for people, we are giving them the information they need to fix it themselves.

    “Lantern continuously receives radio waves broadcast by Outernet from space. Lantern turns the signal into digital files, like webpages, news articles, ebooks, videos and music.

    “Lantern can receive and store any type of digital file on its internal drive. To view the content stored in Lantern, turn on the Wi-Fi
    hotspot and connect to Lantern with any Wi-Fi enabled device. All you need is a browser.

    “Oh, and Outernet is free to use, always.”

    Everything in the tech world always starts out for free, doesn’t it? It’s a cool idea that I hope teaches a lot of isolated, poverty-stricken folks how to “catch fish,” – or build spaceships, whichever suits their needs better.

    We’ll leave out the dark side of the effects of being bombarded by EM frequencies, at all times – especially, because isolated hill people in Hmong country aren’t nearly as likely to be barraged at even close to the levels of dirty EMF of the average Westernized person, lest the latter wrap themselves in Faraday cage-like clothing, bedding and paint the walls of their homes with shielding, besides using a fully grounded plug-in workstation for Internret use and eschewing cellphones entirely (I do know people who do this, out of health concerns and out of necessity, due to electro-sensitivity).
