How Was the San Andreas Fault Made?

I was in a large fairly earthquake, just a few miles away from the San Andreas Fault while visiting the California desert and just after Easter Lunch in 2011. A Mexican town a few hundred miles to the south suffered lots of damage and a few casualties.

I’m more of an East Coast person and it was a very disorienting experience for me!

In this clip, geologists keep an eye on California’s 800 mile-long San Andreas Fault, which many believe is overdue for a major earthquake in the region, one that could destroy some of the most valuable real estate in the world.
