Empire Files: Privacy, Control and the Darknet

This is a great interview of a classmate of mine at NYU Film School Alex Winter, possibly most well-known for his roles as “Bill” alongside Keanu Reeves  in the raucous ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ comedy films.

Abby Martin and Winter have an excellent, in-depth conversation about the topic of Winter’s new directorial work, ‘Deep Web: The Untold Story of Bitcoin and the Silk Road’, about that vast part of the Internet known as the Deep Web, the smaller and more important part of it called the Darknet and the anarchist website called the Silk Road, operated by Ross Ulbrecht. In light of the crimes he actually committed, Ulbrecht was given an unduly harsh double life sentence without the possibility of parole for creating and hosting the site. Winter goes into what he believes to be the reasons for this, and further discusses with Martin issues, including the Drug War, privacy and why effective encryption still matters, in the wake of the WikiLeaks Vault 7 releases.
