One wonders what was motivating His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama in this very curious passage of a 2013 talk he gave at the University of Portland that can almost pass for stand-up comedy.

While wearing a blue sun visor emblazoned with the Portland Pilots’ logo, in an improbable combination with his priestly robes, the Dalai Lama mocks the title of “His Holiness.” He speaks to the innate worth of all sentient beings and suggests that our drive to label things as “other” is at the root of our anxieties. He cracks jokes about meeting beings from another galaxy with different shaped heads and about shaking hands with them, “If they have some sort of hand…”

    • The Dalai Lama could be the most uncontrovesial, beloved figures on the Earth. I wonder how much he knows?

    • When you go to school, you are taught fear, it’s not natural, it has to be taught to you. Just another example of what our schools do to us. Programing us how to deal with other humans, and it’s wrong. If you don’t follow instructions, you are punished. How about punishing “students” with meditation? I think there would be a better outcome.

      • Cristina commandments say: respect the parents, by which the parents can direct their children. Old programms are transferred on……….
        Yes, meditation is the remedy.

    • The Dalai Lama is an interesting character. Some years ago I came across something called the 2045 Initiative. The “initiative’s goal is to create a network with the world’s leading scientists who are focused on the development of cybernetic technology with the ultimate goal of transferring human’s individual consciousness to an artificial carrier. ” What’s very strange about this is that it has the blessing of the Dalai Lama. The quoted parts come from an article that I can only find a cached version of from 2012 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://2045.com/dialogue/29819.html) See below for His Holiness’ statements. I think you’ll be surprised.

“The 2045 initiative has received the blessing and support from the Dalai Lama, as it prepares to announce the second Global Future 2045 Congress, being held in New York, June, 2013.

Dmitry Itskov, founder of 2045, met His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, in his residence in Dharamsala, a small mountain town in northern India.

They discussed the three major steps of 2045 Avatar Project. First, the creation of a human-like robot dubbed “Avatar A,” and a state-of-the-art brain-computer interface system to link the mind with it. Next, it be created a life support system for the human brain, which connects to the “Avatar A,” turning into “Avatar B.” The third step, named “Avatar C”, is developing an artificial brain in which to transfer one’s individual consciousness with the goal of achieving cybernetic immortality.

Creating the “Avatar C” through developing an artificial brain and understanding the nature of human consciousness, says the Dalai Lama, could be attainable, and would be a great benefit to future development of science.”

“The Dalai Lama also agreed that it is crucial to discuss the ethics behind these types of progressive technologies. “We should carry out these experiments with a full sense of responsibility and respect for life that will only benefit humanity, benefit others.””

Very strange indeed. Video here explaining initiative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01hbkh4hXEk

I cannot get the website to load. I haven’t heard anything about this since 2012. Found this article from March 14, 2016: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/dmitry-itskov-2045-initiative-immortality-brain-uploading-a6930416.html

Would like to know why the Dalai Lama would even be interested in a project like this.

      • Yeah, that does seem odd! I’m surprised that he appears not to object to our obsession with the brain as the center of our humanity. The idea that ‘immortality’ can somehow be ours by separating brain function from everything else strikes me as, well, sick. There is very good evidence that brain function alone is not sufficient to drive human behavior. 1+1=2 doesn’t address the Hard Problem of consciousness, or lead to purposiveness . The brain is a tool. Who or what wields the tool?

      • In a spiritual way, this is jealousy, where money comes in focus.
I perceive a spiritual and a material jealousy.

    • Billions of people have shaken hands with non human aliens in human form over decades especially reptilians.

However the Dalai Lama probably means aliens who don’t appear human but humanoid.

    • Yes that is the situation: Because we are different, we can not love each other.
Any one is different because of different educated pains.

The strange thing now is, when I try to show how it is possible to let go of the pains, the answer is no. They say no, because than they do not know anymore who they are.
Today all human pains are used for building up any kind of possession.

To be alien means, to unknown, so different.
Seen this way it seems that there are enough aliens on earth.
