It’s Labor Day Weekend in America.
In Brazil, the most important holiday is Carnaval, which the announcer accurately describes as “the Fourth of July and the Super Bowl, rolled into one!”
This clip shows a young newcomer to Rio de Janeiro who was able to get into the big parade with the best samba school in the world, Mangueira. Her story reminds me of when I was in the big procession at the Sambadrome – how we didn’t know what costume we were going to be until the last minute and the incredible rush of emotion we all experienced in this amazing event, which is a celebration of life, creativity and of joy, itself.

This is a small sample of the Carnaval samba parade in Rio de Janeiro. It covers one out of the 14 parades to happen during two days and flashes of some of the other 13 parades.
