‘Ants: Nature’s Secret Power’ won critical acclaim for its use of macrophotography and input by renowned German evolutionary biologist Bert Hölldobler. To get a better understanding of ant society, zoologists poured 10 tons of cement into the tunnel carvings and subterranean highways connecting main chambers in a single colony. Excavating the resulting framework revealed massive structures of fantastic specialization that appeared as though a single mind had hewn them. In their colony, the ants dug separate tunnels for letting air into the colony, letting air out and transporting ants.
