It was only a matter of hours before the first plane hit the World Trade Center on 9/11 that we were told who to blame.

Many in the Western World knew little to nothing about Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network as the horror of 9/11 unfolded on TV.

Some had heard his name before connected to the bombing of the USS Cole or embassy bombings, but a better understanding of the man and the Islamist networks remains mostly mostly in the purview of South Asian scholars and government officials.

How did the media know so quickly that he was behind the attacks?
