Sometimes winter extends its deadly rich into the shallow waters under the ice.
When seawater freezes into sea ice, it releases its salt, releasing super salty brine. This flows through cracks in the ice into the seawater below.
The brine then sinks because it’s much more dense than the surrounding water. It’s also much colder, so the seawater freezes on contact, forming what’s called a “brinicle.”
