Henry Louis Gates, chair of the African-American Studies Department at Harvard University, traveled to the island of Hispaniola to explore how Dominicans and Haitians have related over the years; Haiti’s two-decade, early 19th century occupation of the Dominican Republic; and how the Dominican Republic’s government taught white supremacy in its schools. Dominican President Rafael Trujillo, who proved genocidal to Haitians, wore makeup to make himself appear paler.

Gates’s historical scholarship lays out Haiti’s pioneering role in abolishing slavery in the New World.
