The moon didn’t always look the way it does to us today.
Then, 4.3 billion years ago, a collision occurred on its surface, resulting in the Solar System’s largest known impact crater.
What were once known as lunar “seas,” or maria, were formed by ancient volcanoes on the lunar surface.
Subsequently, after the magma cooled to darkness, cratering made the moon we see today.
