Head-to-head with US attorneys, the cyberdissidents in the 2014 documentary “The Hacker Wars” say their prosecutions were capricious; the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act that beleaguered them, outdated; and that what they call a fight for more open societies should be precious to us all.

Texan writer Barrett Brown claimed his research in opposition to private security firms made him a bigger target for prosecutors than even his threats to an FBI agent’s family. Andrew Auernheimer, a white nationalist who celebrates the Oklahoma City bombing, maintained that AT&T sought retribution for embarrassing the telecom giant more than consumer protection. Jeremy Hammond, who is serving a decade in prison after giving a private intelligence firm’s information to WikiLeaks, claimed an active FBI informant named Hector Monsegur enabled him to commit the offense in the first place.

Jaime Cochran of The Internet Chronicle, former NSA senior executive Thomas Drake and Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept help define the debate on who is a terrorist and who is a freedom fighter.
