For some reason, this Russian TV news station thought it was a good idea to report that the spectacularly large meteor that was captured by many phone cameras last week, injuring roughly 1,000 people, due its effect of causing hundreds of windows and weaker structures to implode – had found a final resting place in the ground.
The only problem was that the footage used was that of the infamous “Door to Hell,” in Derweze, Turkmenistan, a collapsed natural gas well which geologist attempted to burn off in 1971 but which still continues to burn 42 years later.
This TV report caused inadvertent Internet hoaxes the world over – including one generated by yours, truly…
One wonders what was really going on with that meteor, if that Russian TV news show felt compelled to concoct that story?
