The Earth has been hit by asteroids and comets throughout its history. Some of these events have caused Extinction Level Events, as theorized in the demise of the dinosaurs.

According to former Royal Astronomers, Victor Clube and Bill Napier, a series of cometary impacts in 536 ACE were the final blow that caused the Fall of Rome. The billions of tons of the dust that got kicked up created a mini Ice Age, crop failures and mass famine, leaving the Romans unable to control their colonies.

In the US, former Astronaut, Rusty Schweickart is leading the call to develop a solution for the the threat posed by Near Earth Objects (NEOs). In his opinion, “We will have failed as a species” if we do not get NEOs fully under control.

The Russians and the Chinese are also working on solutions to the threat of extraterrestrial impact from NEOs, such as that posed by the asteroid Apophis, which will be swinging close to Earth again in 2029.

If Apophis passes through the “gravitational keyhole” at that time, it will set itself up for an irrevocable collision with Earth on April 13, 2036 — that is, unless we figure something out in the meantime…
